Elad Caplan on "Who is a Jew" in the 21st Century: The Chief Rabbi's Investigations, Blacklists, and DNA Tests and Why It Matters to the Jewish People
Wednesday, January 29, 2020 • 3 Shevat 5780
8:00 PM - 9:00 PMKesher IsraelIsrael's religious establishment has the authority to determine the official Jewish status of Israeli citizens and of Jews around the world who seek to make Aliya (immigrate to Israel), marry or divorce in Israel. In recent years, this process has become increasingly inflexible and isolationist, undermining the unity of the Jewish people. ITIM is the leading Jewish life advocacy organization in Israel, challenging policies and procedures that limit Jews' abilities to lead full Jewish lives, and that fail to reflect the diversity of Jewish tradition and practice.
Elad Caplan is Managing Director of ITIM, an Israeli organization committed to increasing
participation in Jewish life by making Israel’s religious establishment more inclusive. ITIM helps people navigate state-administered matters of Jewish life like marriage and conversion, challenges Israel’s religious establishment to protect civil rights, improve government transparency, and ensure equality under the law, and offers alternatives programs, such as Giyur K’Halacha, Israel’s largest non-governmental conversion court network. ITIM is a leading force in shaping public policy and promoting legal struggles for shaping Israel as a Jewish and democratic state.
